There are no words to say about the Sandy Hook Elementary tragedy that don't hurt. I cannot imagine what the families and the community must be going through. I saw somewhere that there was one single murder in the community in the last decade. This will likely be the worst thing many of these people see in their lifetimes.
There are a lot of Facebook posts and talk in general about religion - people questioning their faith. There's a lot of talk about gun control. People want to know how to make schools safer. They want to know how to prevent this kind of thing from happening again. I wrote a short article earlier, Is it Time to Re-Think Homeschool? . I can't tell you how many people I've heard say they are re-thinking this issue after the loss of 26 innocent lives (20 of whom were young children) on Friday. This is definitely one way to keep our children safe - by keeping them at home.
When we rewind to the previous shootings of the last few years, sadly, we find them in theaters, out in public, in temples, etc. - places that should be safe. Is taking away everyone's guns the solution? I don't believe so. Look at what happened in China. We can't possibly have the solution for something someone can do at any time...There's no controlling free-will. We can only implement safeguards to try to prevent them from following through. I hope to see new security standards at schools nationwide. Sandy Hook already had safeguards in place - they locked the school's doors at 9:30am each morning to prevent strangers from entering. Each state already has different ideas on how to handle these safety implementations. Let's hope they buckle down and bring forth more ideas on this urgent situation. There are people in this nation who do not have the option of homeschooling - they have to send their children to school each day. They must have the reassurance of knowing their children will be safe. Maslow's hierarchy of psychological needs includes security - meaning this is something each individual must know they have to survive. I sincerely believe parents need the assurance of security for their children.
This is such a solemn time for our nation. The families and the community there in Connecticut are in my prayers, as are the lives lost on Friday. Let's all keep them in our hearts and minds during the upcoming holidays...
Until next time,
Heather
