8 Car Buying Tips
Heather Hawkins on June 13, 2012
If you’re a newbie at car shopping, here’s a few tips: 1) Research your car – know what you want or at least narrow it down. Then, know the values of each and what you specifically like – gas mileage, cabin space, etc.
2) Be honest with yourself – know what you don’t like about the cars you’re looking at.
3) Be honest with the salesman – he/she will need to know what you’re looking for and how soon you wish to buy. It’s their job to help you.
4) Trust your instincts – if something doesn’t set right about either the salesman, dealership or car, then you can walk away guilt (and obligation) free
5) Use a reputable dealer – when you research cars, try to research a few local dealerships. Know what they offer – free oil changes and free inspections are sometimes available.
6) Know your budget and stick to it – set a realistic budget by knowing what you want your monthly payment to be. Don’t spend more than you can afford. Research your loan options and know what term and interest rate you’re looking for. Compare your financial institution’s loans with your dealership, if applicable.
7) Get insurance – if you buy a car, get insurance – even if it’s not mandatory where you are. There are a lot of “what if’s” and this will give you peace of mind.
8) Enjoy! – enjoy your car and maintain it – keep it clean, keep the oil changed and make sure all other recommended maintenance is taken care of.
