Flying with a Baby
by Heather Hawkins on June 16, 2012
You’ve decided to take your baby on an upcoming flight. You’ll need to consider the following:
1) Which airline will you use? Most (if not all airlines) have the same guidelines for children under the age of 2.
2) How many seats will you need? You can purchase a seat for your baby, usually at a discounted price. Also, your child (under the age of 2) can ride in your lap. Most airlines will recommend buying a seat for your baby and utilizing a car seat for maximum safety.
3) What are you carrying on? You’re allowed a purse, a carry on and a diaper bag. Most airlines will let you check a stroller in upon boarding, but you’ll want to check ahead of time.
4) Diaper bag exceptions – You’re allowed to bring your baby’s necessities, including bottles and sippy cups. TSA will have to do a quick test, but you get to watch for quality assurance.
5) What should you bring? You’ll want to bring a few of your baby’s favorite things – comfort items such as pacifiers are very helpful. Snacks and new toys can also help keep your baby content. Books can come in handy, as well. 6) Safety – Never leave your baby unattended. Also, be careful walking about the cabin once the captain has turned off the seatbelt sign. Unexpected turbulence can happen at any time!
7) Ground transportation – When you get on the ground, it’s good to know what your arrangements are. Knowing ahead of time can save you some trouble!
Ask questions – Don’t hesitate to call the airline for questions before your flight. Once you reach the airport/your aircraft, ask the staff for help if you need to.
